About Hammond Reads, Inc.

Hammond Reads, Inc. is dedicated to the idea that reading and literacy are a vital part of life at every stage.

Hammond Reads strives to educate the community about literacy across the life cycle, from birth to the senior years, and our work includes information sharing, advocacy, and resource networking. We address all facets of literacy, including emergent literacy, English as a Second Language and family, cultural, financial and health literacy.

Hammond Reads promotes literacy efforts by:

  • Linking individuals and services in the community
  • Identifying, supporting and encouraging partnerships of service providers
  • Creating awareness and understanding of the literacy issues in our community
  • Identifying gaps in service
  • Promoting literacy events

History of Hammond Reads

In 2001, then-Mayor Dedelow wanted to encourage literacy and reading in the City of Hammond. In early summer, representatives from the City of Hammond, the Hammond Public Library, School City of Hammond and the Calumet Area Literacy Council began to meet under the name "Hammond Reads Partnership," an 18-month collaboration that would support existing literacy organizations.

Within months of our first meeting, we sponsored four Literacy Town Meetings in order to define literacy and discuss its efforts; offer Hammond literacy statistics; identify organizations providing services that encourage literacy, education or reading, and identify gaps in services.

After several meetings, it was obvious that literacy in Hammond was too important an issue to be addressed for only 18 months and the stakeholders voted to pursue incorporation. Hammond Reads, Inc. was incorporated in the State of Indiana on October 25, 2002 and received 501(c)3 status on March 23, 2005.
