Projects

Project ABC

Through Project ABC, books are distributed to children at WIC offices within the city of Hammond. We work with Northwest Family Services to get these books to parents and their children.

Dictionary Project

In October 2008 we collaborated with Hammond Rotary and the Telecomm Pioneers to give every third grader (both public and private) in the City of Hammond a dictionary.

This has become an annual project. The three groups work together to prepare the dictionaries for distribution, putting in a bookplate so each student can write their name in their dictionary, and presenting the dictionaries to the students. Students are excited to have their own dictionary to take home.

Essay Contest

Since 2001, Hammond Reads has sponsored an annual essay contest and selects a theme that involves literacy. Past themes have included, “How can reading make the world a better place?” “Why I like to read,” “Why is reading important to me?” and “What I learned from my favorite book.”

The Essay Contest has eight categories: Primary I, Primary II, Intermediate, Middle School, High School, Teacher, Adult and Senior Adult. Winners are recognized in an awards celebration, held in recent years at Morton High School, where they read their winning essays and are awarded certificates and prizes donated by area businesses.

Book Donations and Giveaways

Hammond Reads donates books to Parents as Teachers, Books, Brushes and Bands for Education, classroom teachers, at parenting events, to the Lake County Juvenile Center, literacy events at schools, and school media centers. We give away books at back-to-school events and at the Pampered Woman show, participate in an annual Wellness Fair at Purdue University Calumet, distributing information on literacy and reading, and in Books to Bridge the Region.
